Spark a Lifetime of Giving: The “Kids in the Kitchen” Journey

Imagine planting a seed. A seed that grows into a lifelong commitment to compassion and helping others. That’s the power of our “Kids in the Kitchen” program – an extraordinary opportunity to nurture these values in the young hearts of your group. Here, it’s about more than just whipping up some snacks; it’s a journey of discovery filled with fun and purpose.

Why is teaching kids about giving back so important? It shapes who they become. By showing them the joy of helping others, you plant a seed that blossoms into empathy, social responsibility, and a desire to make a positive difference. In our program, children learn that no act of kindness is too small. Even something as simple as preparing a healthy snack can have a real impact on someone in need.

This experience will stay with them. More than just a fun activity, “Kids in the Kitchen” creates a lasting memory. They’ll see firsthand the power of teamwork and the satisfaction of giving back. It’s a powerful lesson that will stay with them long after the program ends, inspiring them to continue making a positive impact throughout their lives.

How it Works:

  1. Pick a Date: Choose a convenient time for your group. Our schedule runs Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday from 1 pm to 4 pm, however, we so have flexible scheduling to accommodate your needs if alternate timeslots are needed.  Reach out to Vesna at vmitchell@newmarketfoodpantry.ca for evening or Saturday spots.
  2. Choose what they would like to prepare: We’ll email you to discuss options that fit your group’s age and interests. Some of the choices include:
    • Birthday in a Bag: Create special packages filled with treats to bring smiles to children celebrating birthdays during challenging times.
    • Healthy Snack Packs: Assemble wholesome snacks that nourish children in need.
    • Pantry Meal Kits: Craft easy-to-prepare meal kits for families facing food insecurity.
    • Community Fridge Meals: Prepare simple yet nourishing meals and sandwiches for our Community Fridge, directly impacting those struggling with food insecurity.
    • Simple Nourishing Meals:  You can also cook easy-to-prepare nourishing meals for our Pantry guests.
  3. Bring the ingredients on their scheduled day and have fun making a difference in the community: We’ll provide a list of ingredients based on your chosen option, ensuring a fun and productive session for your group.

Want to go a step further? Hold a food drive to collect the ingredients for your chosen project! We have a handy guide to get you started.  This adds an extra layer of learning about food security and community support.

During your 2-hour session, your group will:

  • Become ambassadors of kindness as you assemble meals or snacks for those in need.
  • Gain firsthand experience in a real kitchen, learning basic cooking skills.
  • Enjoy a guided tour of our Pantry facility, where they’ll learn about the vital role of food banking in our community. They’ll witness firsthand how food can bridge gaps and foster connections.

In the heart of our kitchen, your children will discover the incredible impact they can make when they come together, learn about food insecurity and food waste, and share their time and energy with those in need. This program isn’t just about snacks; it’s about sowing seeds of compassion, fostering connections, and nurturing a generation of changemakers. Join us in making a difference that goes far beyond the kitchen.
